Keeper Review
I am a big fan of the trope friends to lovers’ romance. Therefore, when Goodreads recommended this book to me, I had to read it. I went into this one expecting much more than I got. Kingston and Camden were childhood best friends who were also seniors in high school. Camden, the responsible---I didn’t want to use this word but it was the only one that came to mind---took care of his younger sister as well as the football team and his best friend Kingston. Kingston, on the other hand, was the opposite.
I thought long on hard about how to speak about Kingston. This guy was hellbent on staying in the present. God forbid anyone from talking about the future around him. I couldn’t with him. He was just too much. I couldn’t help but be shocked by some of the crap that came out of his mouth. Even so, he had a caring side which I thought was cute. He cared about the people around him. Or maybe it was just one person. Either way, he showed it on many occasions.
The first few chapters were uneventful. The relationship didn’t start up until a few chapters in. I was not a big fan of that strategy. Camden thought the best way to be himself was to leave his town. He couldn’t reveal his true feelings to his best friend for fear he would be crucified and lose his friendship. The author took more chapters than needed to get this point across. Things flipped upside down when Kingston broke up with his girlfriend and found out the truth about why Camden decided to apply for college.
Judging from the synopsis on Goodreads, the book could have gone down a different road. A much better road. Still, their relationship kind of grew on me as I read to the end. Kingston got better and so did life. I could not fandom the mom, though. I was like ‘when did this b*tch have time for that while her son was working his ass off.’ To think she told him on such a day and thought a sorry-ass apology would suffice. Like 'what?' I could not relate to her. Ugh. Anyhow, the ending was sweet and so was the couple. I wished the romance had started from the get-go, it would have made me enjoy the book a bit more, but it was what it was.
I recommend this sweet read to readers not only lovers of friends-to-lovers romance tropes but those who felt trapped at least once in their life. Camden was a great example that no matter where we are, we can survive and push forward. Even with the ones we love.
